Gerald G. Jacovetty Sr., affectionately known as “Jerry” and “Smiley,” passed away on June 13, 2026, at the age of 89. Born on August 13, 1936, in Wheeling, he was the son of Vincent and Agnes Jacovetty.
A man of deep faith, Jerry’s family shared that he was called home by his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and reunited with loved ones who preceded him in death, including his wife, Lolly; his son, Jerry; infant daughter, Marjorie Beth; and grandson, Tyler.
Jerry is survived by his sons, Jeff (Bonnie) and John (Judy), daughter-in-law Cathy, grandchildren Justin (Sarah), Laura, Jacob (Alyssa), and Joseph, and his great-granddaughter Talia, who lovingly called him “Pop.”
Jerry began his career as a surveyor and contributed extensively to the construction of Interstate 77 and Interstate 70. He later dedicated years of service as a firefighter and was among the first paramedics in Wheeling. He also worked for and retired from [Sears](https://www.sears.com?utm_source=chatgpt.com), where he became a cherished member of the Ohio Valley Sears family.
Known to friends as “Smiley” because of his constant grin, Jerry was a devoted grandfather who spent countless hours playing games with his grandchildren and helping them solve life’s problems—whether a broken toy or a bigger challenge. He was also a lifelong baseball enthusiast who enjoyed playing, coaching, and following the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Jerry will be remembered for his kindness, dedication to family, service to his community, and unwavering love for those around him.
